Signed Inuit Serpentine Sculpture – Hunter with Goose, Cape Dorset, 30 cm
Highlights
The engraved signature appears to spell “Joe” or “Josie”, possibly referring to a known Inuit artist from the region.
Standing 30 cm tall (including the base) and weighing 3.95 kg, the sculpture rests on a modern wooden base. A discreet metal rod was added to stabilize the piece, compensating for natural oxidation of the stone, a common trait in older serpentine carvings.
This is a powerful example of 1970s Inuit figurative art with strong cultural symbolism.
